Wayne Gretzky is known as "The Great One" for his history as an incredible player whose goal records were thought to never be surpassed. However, one hopeful has recently become the first to break one of these in a game earlier today.
In this afternoon's game against Boston, Washington took the game, ending in a 3-0 score. This last goal, however, earned Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals the new record for the most empty net goals.
Ovechkin has had an unusually rough start to his season with only 11 goals in 50 games. However, he may be making a personal comeback after finally scoring his 57th and record-breaking empty net goal.
This empty netter could be all the motivation this player needs to make a big enough dent in the overall scoring record. Having a total of 834 goals overall, he is only 61 from taking this outstanding record.
With being second to worst in the metropolitan division and 22nd overall, it is hard to say whether the Capitals will have enough of a chance this season for Ovechkin to make a dent in the remaining goals. Still, this 38-year-old forward may have enough time left in the NHL to finally beat this incredible record. Only time will tell.
