The Edmonton Oilers 2023-24 began in the worst way possible, and while there's many reasons for those struggles, it was Head Coach Jay Woodcroft that paid the ultimate price after being fired from the team.
Despite the 2-9-1 record to start the season, many felt that letting him go was the wrong move, as the goaltending was dreadful no matter the coach, but ultimately, it was the move that the team believed was best.
During his tenure in Edmonton, Woodcroft tallied an impressive 79-41-13 record, and while the team didn't experience playoff success, they grew under his leadership, making many question the move.
Since that time, several other coaches around the league have been fired too, with NHL Insider Frank Seravalli linking him to several new jobs around the league, specifically with the Ottawa Senators.
The Senators are reportedly looking to hire a new GM before finding their next Head Coach, but it appears when they do so, Woodcroft is one of their biggest targets, as many around the league still believe he's a fantastic coach.
