Insider Clears Up Mark Schiefele's Future With the Jets
Mark Scheifele's status with the Jets has been muddied this offseason, with many saying he will be traded before a contract extension is signed. We now know what the future holds for him and the Jets.
Scheifele Reportedly Not on the Trade Market Anymore For Jets
According to Darren Dreger, the Jets are no longer actively looking to trade Scheifele as they head into training camp.
«There have been contract discussions on both players, Scheifele and [Connor] Hellebuyck, but right now, going into the training camp process for all these clubs, it's backburner for the Winnipeg Jets and for the players involved here.» He added, «Despite what the critics say, the Jets believe they've got a good time and they're in win-now mode.»
If the Jets believe they are in a position to win, it makes sense that they would keep Scheifele. He is a natural goal-scoring talent who knows how to play in Winnipeg under their systems.
Scheifele Open To Staying is Good News For the Jets
It was previously rumoured that Scheifele had asked for a trade out of Winnipeg, which was terrible news for the Jets as they would be losing one of their star players. However, Dreger is refuting that ever happened, which should put Jets fans at ease heading into the season that they don't need to be in a hurry to trade him before the deadline.
«Some things that need to be clarified: Scheifele has never asked for a trade, nor has he said that he doesn't want to extend in Winnipeg. But they're going to park it for now and just get the season going"
It is risky to leave Scheifele unsigned for too long, and it would be best for the Jets to extend him before he becomes a UFA. Time will tell what is in the best interest of the Jets as the season kicks off.
