No question the concentration for the Winnipeg Jets right now is carrying their regular season momentum into the playoffs and going on as deep a run as possible. However, general managers are always looking ahead, It's a major part of the job. As such, Kevin Cheveldayoff is reportedly looking to sign a young draft pick with some great experience.
Thomas Milic, 20, was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the fifth round (151st overall) in 2023. He has yet to sign an entry-level contract with the Jets, but it looks like that will change soon.
As mentioned, the Jets do have time if Cheveldayoff would prefer to wait. However, Milic has already been playing for the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. He's also played a game for Team Canada at the latest Spengler Cup tournament, gaining some great international experience, as well as representing Canada at the World Juniors last year. Milic was dominate at the WJC, playing 6 games, and putting up a record of 5-0-0 with a .932 save percentage and a 1.76 goals against average.
With netminder Connor Hellebuyck signed until after the 2030-31 season, Milic won't get getting many starts in the NHL any time soon. That's fine, though. Goaltenders usually take longer to develop than skaters, and Hellebuyck can certainly serve as a great mentor to the youngster. If this is considered a problem, then it's a great one for Cheveldayoff to have. Constantly strengthening the team and preparing for the future is the main focus of any general manager in the NHL.
