The Winnipeg Jets went without a captain last season after Rick Bowness relieved Blake Wheeler from the position in 2022. Now, the Jets have named Adam Lowry to be the third Captain since moving from Atlanta.

This Jets star, though, was "shocked" about the decision.

Kyle Connor Shocked

Jets forward and star Kyle Connor shared his thoughts on the decision to name a Captain in a recent interview and revealed that he told Bowness earlier this year about his feelings.
«That's exactly what I said,» Connor said Thursday. «He called us in the summer, and I told him pretty flat-out. I was like: ‘I'm pretty shocked that we're naming a captain.' I think they had their mind made up.»

The decision comes after only one year without a captain. Lowry was chosen over other alternative captains Mark Scheifele and Josh Morrissey.

New Leadership in the Room

Connor said that his main concern was trying to see how the locker room would feel for the first time without former captain Blake Wheeler. Even though Wheeler wasn't the captain last season, his leadership was still present.
«He still was our leader,» Connor said of Wheeler. «So that's the only, I guess, reason for maybe not appointing a captain, would be to see how that locker room changes without having Wheels in it. But that was my only piece.»

Despite the comments, Connor said he has no problem with the decision to name Lowry captain. He noted Lowry's intensity and ability to bring it to the table every day. He believes Lowry was a great choice.
