Earlier this month, Sidney Crosby signed a two-year extension with the Penguins, keeping him at his usual $8.7M per season through the 2026-27 season. We all know that Sid is willingly underpaid as he wants to keep Pittsburgh competitive moving forward.

Yet insider Pierre LeBrun, hinted that Crosby might have something else in mind with this deal.
LeBrun mentioned that Sid requested a shorter term, possibly to keep the door open for a potential trade to a contender if the Penguins struggle to stay competitive.
According to LeBrun, the Penguins were willing to offer a three- or four-year contract, but it was Crosby who asked for just two.
«The Penguins were ready to give him three or four years in the contract and it was Crosby who said: two is enough. Many would have accepted their offer if they had been in his position. With the deal, many people believe the rumours of Crosby going elsewhere in the league were over, but I'm not so sure about it.

Crosby just had a 42-goal, 94-point season, tied for 12th in league scoring. He's not slowing down and still envisions himself playing in Pittsburgh with Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang by his side. He's already second in franchise history behind Mario Lemieux in goals, assists, and points.
With everything he's accomplished in Pittsburgh, there's no way he'd leave.
But that shorter contract term makes you wonder if there could be a scenario where Sid leaves the Penguins to chase a fourth Cup elsewhere? Only time will tell.
