In the offseason, Jonathan Drouin decided to sign a contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche and today he addressed what went into the decision.
Jonathan Drouin has had a turbulent NHL career. He began as a highly touted prospect for the Tampa Bay Lightning. After not fitting in with their core he requested a trade and was sent to the Montreal Canadiens.
During his time with the Montreal Canadiens Jonathan Drouin struggled to find success in the NHL. In his first season with the Canadiens Jonathan Drouin had 46 points. He followed that up with a moderate increase to 53 points. After that his production fell off of a cliff and the once promising young star was now a veteran looking to hold on.
This is when Jonathan Drouin was sent to the Colorado Avalanche. He would immediately be placed on a scoring line for the Avalanche and thrive. Last season Jonathan Drouin amassed 56 points in 79 games. The only problem is that Jonathan Drouin was on an expiring contract. This meant he had to decide whether to chase a big contract or return to a situation where he had success. Jonathan Drouin decided to return to the Colorado Avalanche.
Now a couple of months after making the decision to return to the Avalanche Jonathan Drouin spoke to the media. He revealed why he made the decision and how he's feeling about spending another year in Colorado.
Jonathan Drouin reveals why he decided to re-sign with the Colorado Avalanche
In a new interview for NHL.com Jonathan Drouin spoke about the upcoming season. As he spoke one of the questions he was asked was why Colorado felt like the right fit to return for another year.
I didn't want to go anywhere else, Drouin said. I really enjoyed my year like I said. [I'm] just happy we could find a deal that made me come back for one more year. Like I said, my family loves it as well. It's a great spot to play and live and I'm very happy to be back.
He continued on and was asked what his goals are for the upcoming season. He kept his expectations simple.
Just to get better every day, Drouin said. I know it's a cliche, but kind of build on what I did at the end of last year.
Avalanche head coach David Bednar also spoke to the media about Jonathan Drouin. He revealed that the team is happy to welcome Jonathan Drouin back into the fold.
We saw major improvements in his game almost immediately last year, Bednar said. Especially on the defending side of it and just how much we trusted him as a player and it led to great offensive numbers, especially the second half of the season
If he can play like that for the second half of the season, Bednar said, I don't see why he can't come back this year and pick up where he left off and continue for a full season and put up career numbers again.
With the NHL season rapidly approaching we will soon get to see what the Colorado Avalanche and Jonathan Drouin have in store. Maybe Jonathan Drouin can even take another step forward and be an elite winger like many projected him to be when he was drafted.
