This season, the forward tallied 49 points in 46 games. There's no doubt that he could significantly help the Oilers' top six ahead of the playoffs.


However, rumors suggest that the player has been hesitant about his contract extension.

Frank Seravalli discussed this in a recent statement on TSN 590.

It was revealed that Guentzel rejected a six year contract at $8.5 million AAV from the Penguins. This means that he's either looking for a bigger salary or a longer deal. Even if the Pens' management pulled all stops to secure him long-term, the player don't seem so commited in reaching a deal with the Penguins.

According to Seravally, the closer we get to the trade deadline, the possibility to see him traded gets bigger. In fact, a trade could be necessary before negotiating for a new contract, especially if Guentzel wants an eight-year deal.

It Won't be Easy to Make the Trade Happen

The Edmonton Oilers were linked to Guentzel. However, the major issue here lies in the Oilers' tight financial situation. They only have 880k available and Guentzel currently earns $6 million.

However, it is still a possible scenario. If Guentzel has had enough in Pittsburgh and wants to win a Stanley Cup at all costs, Edmonton seems like a great destination. If the Oilers can manage to free up the money, adding Guentzel to their top six would make them almost unbeatable.
