The Edmonton Oilers are off to a horrendous start to the season as they currently sit 31st in the league, only ahead of the Sharks. The biggest reason for their struggles has been the team's goaltending and now Ken Holland is facing criticism for the moves he's made at the position.
Ken Holland signed Jack Campbell to a four-year, 20 million dollar contract last offseason. The decision came as a surprise to many after the veteran goaltender put up mediocre-at-best numbers last season. That being said, not many could have predicted that the contract would be this much of a disaster just 10 games into it. Oilers reporter Mark Spector has called the contract Ken Holland's 'biggest mis-step' as general manager of the team.
Campbell's deal is not the only bad contract Holland has ever signed with the Oilers. In fact, its far from the only one. Many Oilers fans have criticized Holland over the years for giving bloated contracts to players who cannot live up to them. The Oilers GM has been forced to fix his own mistakes by spending valuable draft capital, further depleting the team's limited prospect pool.
One must imagine Ken Holland is on the hot seat at this point. If he cannot find a way to turn this team around quickly he could be on his way out of Edmonton. At that point one might begin to wonder what Connor McDavid's future with the team might look like. This is the same organization that traded Wayne Gretzky so anything can happen.
