Derek Forbort was a big free agent signing for Boston in the 2021 off-season. He has been a pillar of defense for the team and is a tough shot-blocking defenseman that all teams wish they had.

Don Sweeney reveals the shocking injury news to reporters

On Friday during his media address regarding the Bruins' trade deadline day, General Manager Don Sweeney broke news to reporters.
He informed the Boston media that Derek Forbort, one of his top penalty killing defensemen, will be sidelined due to injuries and that he would miss the remainder of the year.
Don Sweeney said #NHLBruins Derek Forbort's season is likely over. Put on LTIR today.

Has been «playing through two significant injuries.» One «for sure» requires surgery, the other one «quite possibly could.»

Forbort's season so far has had its injury struggles already

Forbort has played injust 35 of the 65 games this season. He missed over a month of action from December to January, and recently missed a couple games. Forbot averages 17:47 minutes per game, with 3:00 per game of that shorthanded. He is used to shut down the opposition in the defensive end.
The Bruins' chances of making it far in the postseason will be hampered by Forbort to suiting up again until 2024-25.
