The Calgary Flames were hopeful when trading away 34-year-old defenseman Chris Tanev. After his four-year stint with the team, he was part of trade deal with the Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils that would provide the Flames with a conditional third-round pick in the 2026 draft.
However, the condition of the pick relied on Dallas making it past the Western Conference Finals. Provided the Stars' loss in game six against the Edmonton Oilers, the Calgary Flames will not receive their third-round pick in the aforementioned draft. This marks the third unsuccessful trade condition from last season, the others being Noah Hanifin with the Vegas Golden Knights, and Elias Lindholm with the Vancouver Canucks.
Though Flames fans are not taking the news well, Edmonton Oilers fans are thrilled. The team ultimately took out two of these conditions in back-to-back rounds, making their victory in the Western Conference Finals even sweeter.
With another season of failed trade conditions, the Calgary Flames will have to return to the drawing board. Hopefully, they can avoid another season missing out on deals at the hands of Edmonton.
