Next Winter Classic details released by the NHL

The NHL has released details on the next Winter Classic, and it comes with a bit of a twist. The game will take place on New Year's Eve this time.

We aren't even into the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs yet, but the NHL has already released many of the details on the league's next Winter Classic. It will take place in Wrigley Field in Chicago, and features the Blackhawks taking on the St. Louis Blues. There's also a change in the usual date. The NHL Winter Classic has traditionally taken place on New Year's Day. However, this one takes place on New Year's Eve.

The @Discover #WinterClassic between the @StLouisBlues and @NHLBlackhawks will be on December 31, 2024 at 5p ET!"

No reason has been given on why the outdoor game's usual date has been changed, although it's being indicated that the league doesn't want to go up against college football playoff games.

"As expected, next season's Winter Classic between the Blues and Blackhawks has been moved to New Year's Eve at 5:00 p.m. ET on TNT to accommodate the addition of college football playoff games.

This will be the first Winter Classic to be played before New Year's Day."

"The game...will be televised exclusively on TNT in the United States and on SportsNet and TVA Sports in Canada.

This will mark the 16th NHL Winter Classic� and the 42nd NHL regular-season outdoor game.

St. Louis is 2-0 in outdoor games after beating the Blackhawks on 2017, as well as the Minnesota Wild in 2022 at Target Field.
