Jaromir Jagr has officially said that this year will be his final season of professional hockey, and it's hard to believe. After 37 seasons, the 52-year-old legend is finally ready to hang up his skates according to his agent Jaroslav Zidek.
The legendary forward continues to defy the odds, extending his incredible streak of recording points in 37 consecutive professional seasons. Playing for Rytiri Kladno, the Czech Extraliga team he co-owns, Jagr wasted no time getting on the scoresheet this with an assist in Kladno's 5-1 season-opening loss to Dynamo Pardubice.
The apple pushes Jagr's Hockey Hall of Fame eligibility until 2028, due to the rule that players need to be inactive for three years before consideration, but nobody would complain if the period was waived for this generation's MR Hockey.
The man just doesn't quit, and it's a testament to his passion and commitment to the sport.
Jagr's NHL career was legendary, spanning 18 seasons spanning stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, and Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames. His No 68 was retired by Pittsburgh last year.
Even though he hasn't laced up in the NHL since 2016, his numbers are untouchable. He's an eight-time All-Star, five-time Art Ross Trophy winner, Hart Trophy winner, and two-time Stanley Cup champion. He's fifth all-time in assists, fourth in goals, second in points and has the most game-winning goals in history with 135.
Even in retirement, his impact on hockey will be felt for generations.
A Hall of Fame spot is a sure thing whenever that day comes but for now, the focus is on Jagr, potentially closing the curtain on one of the greatest careers in the history of sports.
