The driver of a transport truck that slammed into a bus carrying members of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team in Saskatchewan in 2018 has finally learned his fate by a board tasked with making a decision in the case. Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, who was a rookie semi driver at the time, will be deported back to India.
The crash killed 16 people and injured 13 others. Sidhu had become a permanent resident of Canada just one month before the crash. He drove through a stop sign near Tisdale, Saskatchewan in April of 2018.
Toby Boulet, father of one of the victims of the crash, said he and his wife are very happy with the decision.
Sidhu's lawyer has not said whether an appeal will happen, but didn't contest the decision in court. He said there really isn't much he can do as a permanent resident is not the same as a Canadian citizen.
Sidhu was sentenced to eight years on six different driving offences following the crash. He was granted full parole in 2023. Sidhu has expressed remorse on numerous occasions for his actions, taking full responsibility for what happened.
