Former NHL Coach, who resigned from the Calgary Flames after accusations of racism towards players while an AHL coach, has put out a statement after being hired as Coach for the WHL Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Peters, who was today announced as the Lethbridge Hurricanes Head Coach, admitted personal wrongdoing and remorse in a statement released by the Lethbridge Hurricanes on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Peters left the Calgary Flames organization in November 2019 after former NHLer Akim Aliu publicly accused Peters of using racial slurs while Aliu played under the coach for the AHL Rockford IceHogs. Aliu released his own statement on X, mentioning Peters, via an unnamed third-party NHL coach, attempted to broker a direct apology to Aliu, who wished not to speak to Peters further, questioning the timing of the apology, saying that had he not spoken up, that Peters would not have faced accountability.
The WHL put out their own statement, finding that after a review, that Peters has shown growth and understanding of racial sensitivity following the incident.
Lethbridge has announced Peters will coach the team for the 2023-24 NHL season, with the team saying Peters has passed anti-racism training over the past year. Peters said in his hiring statement that he is ready to promote an "inclusive culture" in Hockey with his hiring.
