Patrik Laine is receiving words of support from close friend and former teammate Nikolaj Ehlers as he deals with a very unfortunate injury at the worst possible time

They came up in the system together and found themselves as teammates after both were high draft picks of the Winnipeg Jets. Now, Nikolaj Ehlers has released an emotional statement on the injury to friend and former teammate Patrik Laine of the Montreal Canadiens after he was injured at the worst possible time Saturday night.
It's still not exactly clear how bad the injury is for Patrik Laine after a collision with Cedric Pare of the Toronto Maple Leafs during a game Saturday. Laine was seen on crutches at the Montreal Canadiens practice on Monday, and reports indicate he likely won't be back to playing in the 2024 calendar year.
Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets was asked to give his thoughts on Patrik Laine's injury and the timing of it. Laine missed almost all of last season with injury and a stint in the NHL Player's Assistance program. Ehlers said Laine is "obviously rattled" right now, and he hopes for nothing but the best for him. Ehlers said it's something he's had to deal with himself.
"I know what it feels like. You come back, you feel good and you get ready to go and something happens again and you're out for a long time again. You feel like it's a cycle that just won't stop. You feel like you can't get out of it. Obviously for Patty he was in a good mindset. Excited to play for Montreal, and I think they were
excited to have him as well. It was a fresh start. But again, injuries happen. I've already talked to him. I know he's obviously rattled right now, but he's also focused on getting back even stronger. And that takes some mental strength as well. That's a good thing. He's in a good place, even though this happened."
Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis confirmed Patrik Laine was excited to play for the team, adding that makes the injury sting that much more.
Cedric Pare received no penalty on the play that injured Patrik Laine, and that was probably the right call. Laine's teammate Arber Xhekaj was fined for going after Pare in the game. It was the maximum amount allowable under the current collective bargaining agreement between the league and players, $3,385.42.
