The Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup last year and a large part of that was their defense being phenomenal. Consisting of Alex Pietrangelo, Shea Theodore, Alec Martinez, Brayden McNabb, Nic Hauge, and Zach Whitecloud, their defense is a top-three defensive core in the NHL.
However, there is one slight problem with their defense, there are 4 left-handed defensemen and only 2 right-handed defensemen.
This trade sends Pesce at a reduced rate to Vegas in exchange for some top assets that Carolina can use to flip for Erik Karlsson if they decide to do so. On top of this, this balances their defense out further by giving them a left-handed defenseman to compliment Brent Bruns, Tony DeAngelo, Jalen Chatfield, and potentially Erik Karlsson.
It is worth noting how the Hurricanes currently have Jaccob Slavin, Dmitry Orlov, and Brady Skjei on their left side but if the Hurricanes decide to trade for Karlsson, one of those players is likely also being moved.
