The New York Rangers have shown tremendous power and depth this year, both in the regular season and their first-round sweep against the Washington Capitals. Despite this success, Peter Laviolette lost his cool at the bench after a goalie interference call was made on MAtt Rempe in their first second-round game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Hardly anyone doubted that the New York Rangers were going to put up a major fight on their road to the Stanley Cup after taking this year's President's Trophy. Now playing in the second round of the playoffs, they are going to have to kick into a higher gear to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes, who finished their gentleman's sweep against the New York Islanders last week.
Despite being the odds-on favorite to win, the New York Rangers have faced a minor setback in their first game against the Carolina team. During the first period, rookie enforcer Matt Rmpe was put in the penalty box for goalie interference after knocking down Freddie Andersen.
Though he was likely upset about this call, compared to head coach Peter Laviolette, Rempe seemed as cool as a cucumber. The head coach could be seen at the Rangers bench yelling about the call, assumedly believing the fault was on Staal.
The Rangers are currently up 3-1 at the end of the second period against the Carolina Hurricanes. With how the team's last series went, the call on Rempe may not matter for New York in the end anyway.
