The Erie Otters have seen some incredible players come through their organization over the years, but few have made the impact that now Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid did. He's gone on to win the Hart Trophy several times along with countless honours through his stellar NHL career, and now, the Otters are joining in with another big celebration.
According to a report, the Otters are officially retiring McDavid's No. 97, coincidentally 97 days from now on January 10th in what should be a fantastic ceremony that honours one of the best individual players that the Ontario Hockey League has ever seen.
McDavid spent three seasons with the Otters between 2012 and 2015, scoring an incredible 97 goals and 353 points in just 200 games played, putting together an immense career that led him all the way to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. Through those three years, the Ontario native showed traits of being an incredible player at the next level, and through nine NHL seasons, he's on pace to be one of the five best players that the league has ever seen.
The Otters may not have won much during McDavid's time, but there's no denying his individual brilliance throughout the time he spent there, and on January 10th, he receives a long overdue honour of joining Brad Boyes and Vince Scott as being the only players in Otters history with their jersey numbers retired.
