Only one Oilers top prospect picked to represent Edmonton in upcoming NHLPA showcase

The Edmonton Oilers are a star NHL team now, but with their prospect pool, they could see playoff success long into the future. As with all other teams, a rookie will have the chance to showcase their talents in the upcoming NHLPA Rookie Showcase Event. This is set to be held at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Wednesday, September fourth.

The Edmonton Oilers had some options, but many expected one player in particular. This is none other than forward Matthew Savoie, who was the team acquired in a trade deal that sent forwards Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio to the Buffalo Sabres. This 2022 ninth-overall pick has shown great promise, posting two 90-point seasons in the WHL.

However, those in charge of event logistics went in a different direction. Instead of relying on a prospect forward, the Edmonton Oilers will be represented by goaltender Olivier Rodrigue. He was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, at 62nd overall. He has also proven his worth, playing four seasons with the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL, recording a .912 and .916 save percentage in the last two seasons.

This NHLPA rookie showcase will have some of the best prospects in the league, including the San Jose Sharks' number-one pick Macklin Celebrini. Hopefully, Olivier Rodrigue will not feel out of his depth or element behind the crease. Otherwise, management may regret not choosing Matthew Savoie for the event.
