The offseason was short for the Oilers this year, as they had a pretty successful playoff run last season, but ultimately fell short of their goal to win the Stanley Cup.
The defence is the biggest question mark coming into this season, as this was the biggest gap in their performance heading down the stretch of the 2023 playoffs. They can only improve so much, sure, but it is vital to their success.
The Oilers have vowed before that they are committed to improving their team defence, and that is a must if they want to succeed in the playoffs. Take Vegas, for example. They were a measly 12th in the league for 5 on 5 goals against during the regular season. In the playoffs, though? They shot up to fourth (compare that to Edmonton's 11th out of 16).
It is clear that Stanley Cup-winning teams can find what it takes to win down the stretch, and often that comes at the back end of the ice. That is the ultimate question for the Oilers to answer this training camp, who can step up on Defence?
