There's no doubt that the Edmonton Oilers need to look at every available option when it comes to revamping their starting lineup this season. Trades are tough to make, and cost a lot when you are desperate like the Oilers, so looking to the free-agent market is a no-brainer.
Now, reports that the Oilers are looking at defenseman Ethan Bear have arisen. The Oilers would be stupid not to at least make the consideration, given Bear's past experience with the team. Bear would also give them more options on the right side defensively, which is exactly what the Oilers need.
Bear played 61 games with the Canucks last season, scoring 3 goals and 13 assists while maintaining an impressive +6 rating. The Canucks did not qualify Bear at the end of last season knowing that he had an upcoming surgery that required recovery.
Bear, recovering well and seen skating in Kelowna, is now gearing up for a return to the NHL. While the Oilers should be interested in his services, it appears the Canucks might be as well. A bidding war for Bear is not what the Oilers need right now.
