A division rival brokered a trade yesterday and it has come to light that the Oilers were heavily interested in him.

Lafferty Traded To Vancouver

Yesterday the Vancouver Canucks and the Toronto Maple Leafs brokered a trade sending forward Sam Lafferty to the west coast.
We have traded forward Sam Lafferty to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Vancouver's fifth-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft.

While it does not seem like all too much, Lafferty brings a valuable physical presence to the ice which almost any NHL team could use.

Insider Confirms The Oilers Were In On Lafferty

Before Lafferty was ultimately moved to the Canucks, it has been revealed by insider Elliotte Friedman that the Oilers were trying to make a move for him.
Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts:

"I do think the Oilers had been one of the teams that talked with the Leafs about Sam Lafferty. I think the Oilers had some interest in Lafferty going back to last season, but they obviously couldn't work out a deal."

What likely held the Oilers back from this trade is the unwillingness to part with a fourth-round pick and being cap-strapped. The Oilers were forced to place three NHL players on waivers two days ago just to get under the cap.
Hopefully for Edmonton, losing out on Lafferty does not bite them in the butt and they can move on and focus on winning the Stanley Cup.
