The QMJHL has officially undergone this year's drafting process, with many young players getting a chance to develop their skills ahead of their availability for the NHL. The Cape Breton Eagles were lucky enough to win the draft lottery and earn the first overall pick.
However, the Eagles surprised several fans with their decision to trade this first-overall pick. The team decided to broker a deal with the Quebec Remparts, who gave them Louca Connolly and a few draft picks to be used in the next few years.
The Quebec Remparts were consequentially able to pull in Maddox Dagenais, son of former NHLer Pierre Dagenais. The 16-year-old put up an impressive 42 goals and 39 assists in 35 total games, making him an easy target for this first pick.
However, Cape Breton's reasoning for trading their pick appeared to be based entirely on the new Remparts forward. According to several Eagles fans, the player would only play for Quebec, making a trade-off easy for the draft lottery winner.
With the Remparts having failed miserably in their last season, Maddox Dagenais will undoubtedly work tirelessly to pull the team up from the bottom. With the player's scoring prowess and impressive stature, Quebec may have a better chance at success as soon as he gets put on the ice.
