In a recent interview with the Athletic, Tim Stutzle made comments about why he thought the Senators were poised to win with their core. He believes that its too difficult to win when players make too much money.
This is clearly a shot at players in the league making over 10 million dollars, and it's hard not to think of McDavid since he was the highest-paid player in the league until Matthews signed his extension.
Stutzle signed his 8-year contract extension a year ago worth $8.35 million AAV. The Senators Captain, Brady Tkachuk, is poised to make a little over $8.2 million this year, and Thomas Chabot will make $8 million.
Even though what Stutzle is saying makes sense, it doesn't fully track. Last year, Vegas won the cup with two players making over 9 million on the roster, Mark Stone and Jack Eichel. The year prior, Makar and Rantanen were over 9 million with the Avalanche.
