Trevor Zegras is quickly becoming the face of the Anaheim Ducks. He's not only a flashy presence on the ice but also has a boatload of charisma off it. Even though he's young, it's evident that he could be a major part of the franchise's future. However, he's still unsigned.

Zegras' Contract Situation

The Ducks are in the process of figuring out what kind of contract extension to offer Zegras. As the offseason has progressed, the rumors about why he hasn't signed have only gotten louder.

Some are looking at Zegras' performance last season when he had more ice time. They point to a lower plus/minus and more penalties when he played longer. But it's unclear if these factors are a major concern for his contract extension.

A Possible Bridge Deal

A recent quote from insider Elliotte Friedman suggests that the Ducks are considering a contract extension for Zegras similar to what other young stars get; a bridge deal. This means a shorter-term contract with the hope of negotiating a bigger one when the salary cap goes up.
One of the things we're hearing is that's likely to be a bridge deal. It doesn't look like that's going to be a long-term deal. It sounds like Zegras and the Ducks—when it gets done—is going to be a bridge.

While a bridge deal could ease fans' concerns, it still raises questions about why he isn't signing a long-term contract in Anaheim, especially if the Ducks plan to build their team with this budding star forward.
Most likely the case is that the Ducks are looking to keep him around for over a decade the bridge deal gives them contract control for three seasons and then they can offer him an eight-year deal after the fact.
