The Winnipeg Jets are sitting pretty atop of the division right now, and they can thank their defensive performance for that result, having historic success keeping the puck out of the back of the net.

Jets Defensive Statistics Pointing to Sustained Success

The Winnipeg Jets are emerging as a darkhorse contender this season, as they made massive shifts to how they perform defensively. The Jets have been able to secure a 1.63 goals against per 60 minutes (GA/60), which is by far the best in the league right now.

If they can continue keeping this number below 1.7, it will be a feat that hasn't been done since 2014, 10 years ago. The team who did that last? The Los Angeles Kings, who went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Jets win again.

Now 11-0-2 last 13 games. 30th straight game allowing 3 or fewer goals. Winnipeg remain #1 in NHL standings.

Performance is Being Led By A Vezina Frontrunner and Star Forward

This sort of effort on the defensive front doesn't come without stark leadership and buy-in from the team's star players, and the Jets are getting just that. Mark Scheifele has renewed energy in the defensive end after being sparked by his contract extension.

What's more, Connor Hellebuyck, who is also coming off a massive contract extension, is having an incredible season. He is currently leading the charge for the Vezina trophy, and is a massive reason for the success that the Jets have been having.

His most impressive stat is that since November 15th, Hellebuyck has a .942 save percentage, towering over the league average of .903.

If the Jets can continue this incredible performance on defence, the rest will seemingly take care of itself.
