The hockey community is grieving the death of ex-Pittsburgh Penguins player Adam Johnson, who tragically died from an accidental skate cut to the throat during an EIHL game with the Nottingham Panthers. Johnson, 29, had a brief stint with the Penguins between 2018 and 2020, mostly playing for their AHL affiliate, Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. In a recent game, the Penguins honored Johnson's life in a touching pre-game ceremony.

Johnson is remembered as a humble, hardworking player, evoking calls for a reevaluation of protective equipment in hockey. The tragic incident has led to discussions between the NHL and the NHLPA, with the NHL "strongly recommending" the use of neck guards for players.
Crosby on the loss of Adam Johnson: "It's something that we've all been thinking about. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. Just a great guy, a great teammate, had an awesome attitude while he was here. Just genuinely happy to be playing in the NHL."

Talks Are Ongoing

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, echoed by other insiders, indicated that talks are ongoing to potentially mandate neck guards, akin to past safety measures with helmets and visors. This incident reflects a broader concern for player safety, prompting a likely push towards more protective gear in hockey.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly tells NHL Network Radio that Gary Bettman has been in contact with Marty Walsh of the PA to get the neck guard issue 'on the radar'. Daly says the NHL is strongly recommending the use of neck guards.

Instead of silence, the Penguins asked for the crowd to give a final cheer for Adam Johnson. Quite a moment.
