One of the big questions the Toronto Maple Leafs have faced this season is whether or not the team would be able to sign William Nylander to a contract extension. Now it seems like the deal may be in its final stages as the team and player are reportedly both looking to announce the extension in the coming weeks.
According to NHL analyst Nick Kypreos, the Leafs and Nylander are working on the final details of a massive, eight-year contract extension with would have Nylander making more than 11 million dollars a season against the salary cap. The contract would make him one of the highest paid players in the league, right up there with his teammates Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.
Kypreos not only gave us an idea of how much money Nylander is going to be making on this new deal, but he also gave us a timeline for it, saying that he believes both sides want the deal to be done before the all-star weekend.
Notably, the all-star weekend is the first weekend of February, giving both sides just under a month to finalize the deal by their target date.
Whether or not he is truly worth 11 million dollars a season remains to be seen though. As we have seen, these mammoth contracts have not turned into post-season success for the Leafs so far. We will just have to see whether or not the team can still find a way to acquire adequate depth players with yet another 11 million dollar player on their books potentially for the next eight seasons.
