Toronto Maple Leafs Proposed Trade Could Turn them into Stanley Cup Favourites

The Toronto Maple Leafs offence is off to an incredible start, but unfortunately, their blue line has held them back, and now, all of the speculation involved them landing either or both Chris Tanev and Nikita Zadorov from the Calgary Flames.

Should the Maple Leafs instead target Mackenzie Weegar?

While they would both be suitable rentals, perhaps with a long-term extension, a recent trade proposal has been revealed that suggests Toronto are perhaps chasing the wrong Flames defenseman.

With the Flames potentially looking at a rebuild, a new target has emerged for Toronto, with a report suggesting that Mackenzie Weegar, the former Florida Panthers standout could be the man to save the Maple Leafs blue line.

An expensive defenseman that could be worth it to acquire

Weegar won't come as cheap as either Tanev or Zadorov, but with an eight-year, $50 million contract, he is definitely a reasonably priced player, and with him scoring 36, 44 and 31 points over his past three seasons, he could certainly be an impactful addition for Toronto.

The Flames are looking to rebuild, and while they would love someone like Weegar to stick around, if the Maple Leafs step up to the plate and offer them a deal they can't refuse, Weegar could be exactly what they need to go from Stanley Cup contender to Stanley Cup favourite.
