Insider Nick Kypreos revealed huge details about the status of Austin Matthews' potential contract extension with the Leafs.

In an interview on Sportsnet 590 Kypreos revealed that it appears the contract amount has been agreed to, the only remaining factor is the term length.

"So, how far does Matthews want to go into the season, now, without a contract? If it is as close as everyone is reporting - and everyone that I've talked to says it's a $13.5M AAV - then what is the term? I think for me, the biggest decision right now, which I think Auston can't decide on or they haven't made a final decision is, is how many years will what we believe is a $13.5M AAV last?" - Nick Kypreos

A contract with an AAV of $13.5 million would put Matthews' as the highest-paid player in the NHL, ahead of Nathan MacKinnon ($12.6 million) and Connor McDavid ($12.5 million).

At almost a million over the next highest player, conversations around whether or not Matthews should take a discount to help the team have inevitably arisen. Both Mackinnon and McDavid were reported to have taken discounts with their respective teams to help with the salary cap.
